Ravana Ella Falls

Ravana Ella Falls, also known as Rawana Ella, is one of the most famous waterfalls in Sri Lanka. Located along the Wellawaya–Ella– Kumbalwela Highway (A23) in the Badulla District, this 25-metre high waterfall is easily accessible as it flows right beside the main road — making it one of the most visited waterfalls in the country.

The waterfall is strongly connected to the Ramayana legend. It is believed that King Ravana hid Princess Sita in a nearby cave known as the Ravana Cave. Because of this mythological connection, the waterfall became widely known as Ravana Ella among both locals and tourists.

Historically, the correct name of the roadside waterfall is said to be “Bambaragama Ella.” There is also another upper waterfall located above this main fall, which is sometimes considered the “true” Ravana Falls due to its proximity to the cave site.

The lower roadside section (Bambaragama Falls) is approximately 9 metres high and flows from the Bandarawela Hill Oya Reservoir. During the dry season, the waterfall reduces significantly, but during the rainy season it flows powerfully, creating a dramatic and photogenic cascade.

Because of its roadside location and scenic surroundings, Ravana Ella Falls is a must-stop attraction for travelers visiting Ella.
