Puna Ella Falls

Puna Ella Falls is a striking 109-metre-high waterfall located near Ramboda in the Nuwara Eliya District. The waterfall is unique for its distinctive ‘Y’ shape, formed when two separate streams descend from different sources and merge at the bottom.

The waterfall on the left originates from Puna Oya, a canal flowing through a forest reserve above. The waterfall on the right is fed by Pundalu Oya, which flows through cultivated lands before reaching the drop. For most of the year, the right-hand cascade carries more water, but during long dry periods the left-hand fall maintains a steadier flow.

Historically, this waterfall was referred to as Ramboda Ella, as it is the tallest waterfall formed by Puna Oya in the Ramboda region. Over time, the name Ramboda Ella has been assigned to the three waterfalls above (Upper, Center, and Lower Ramboda). Today, this waterfall is commonly known as Puna Ella or Poonawa Ella.

Because of the two water sources, the falls are sometimes individually referred to as Puna Oya Ella and Pundalu Oya Ella. However, the name Puna Ella is most widely used.

The waterfall is visible from a distance along the Pussellawa–Nuwara Eliya Road, but reaching it requires following one of several footpaths. As the trails are not clearly marked, obtaining guidance from a local resident is recommended.
