Overview
Lanka Ella Waterfall is a 32-metre (105 ft) high waterfall located near Walhaputenna in Haldummulla, within the Badulla District of Sri Lanka’s Uva Province. Situated approximately 1 km from Bambarakanda Falls — the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka — Lanka Ella remains largely untouched due to its remote forest setting.
The waterfall derives its name from the unique rock pool at its base, which resembles the teardrop shape of the island of Sri Lanka. This natural basin is believed to be extremely deep and is not suitable for bathing.
Unlike Bambarakanda, Lanka Ella is accessible only by foot. Visitors must first reach the Bambarakanda Falls area and then follow a forest trail of about 1 km leading to Lanka Ella. The trek passes through dense montane forest and offers a peaceful wilderness experience with minimal human disturbance.
Because of its isolation, Lanka Ella provides a raw and authentic highland waterfall experience ideal for hikers and nature lovers seeking quieter alternatives to more popular tourist spots.
