Overview

The Horton Plains Trail is a high-altitude walk inside Horton Plains National Park. The visitor circuit crosses patana grasslands and montane cloud forest, habitats that form part of the UNESCO-listed Central Highlands of Sri Lanka.

National-park status makes this a controlled visitor route rather than open upland. The Department of Wildlife Conservation requires visitors to enter national parks under a permit and its conditions. Follow the route and staff directions in force on the day; a visible animal path or grassland line is not an alternative trail.

The highlight of the trail is World's End, a dramatic escarpment offering expansive views across the southern lowlands when conditions are clear. Mist, cloud, rain, and wind can develop at any time, so visibility is never guaranteed. The route also passes Baker's Falls in a cool, forested section.

Horton Plains is one of Sri Lanka's most important watershed regions, forming the source of major rivers including the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe. The plateau is often covered in mist, with cool temperatures and occasional ground frost adding to its unique highland atmosphere.

Wildlife such as sambar deer and endemic bird species are commonly seen along the trail, making it both a scenic and ecological highlight. Best explored early in the morning, the Horton Plains Trail offers a rare combination of dramatic views, biodiversity, and accessible hiking in the heart of Sri Lanka's central highlands.

Trail safety

Review these trail-specific notes before setting out

  • Stay on the marked trail - the escarpment edge at World's End has no safety barriers.
  • Do not approach the cliff edge beyond the viewing platform.
  • Weather can change rapidly - mist and rain arrive quickly from the south.
  • Sambar deer on the trail may seem tame but are wild animals - do not feed or approach them.
  • Begin with enough daylight to complete the entire circuit and return before the park's current closing time.

Travel Tips

  • Start early to allow enough daylight for the circuit, but remember that mist can obscure World's End at any time.
  • Bring a warm, wind-resistant layer because conditions on the exposed plateau can be cold and change quickly.
  • Carry enough water and food for the full circuit, and follow the park's current waste and food rules.
  • Visit on weekdays in low season to avoid the large crowds that arrive on Sri Lankan public holidays.
  • Allow enough time for your own pace, rest stops, weather, and any current park instructions rather than relying on a fixed completion time.
  • Confirm current opening hours, fees, permits, and entry rules with the Department of Wildlife Conservation or park staff before travelling.
