Travel Region

Horton Plains

A protected high-elevation landscape represented here by the main circuit, Great World's End and the demanding Kirigalpoththa hike.

Regional overview

Planning a Visit to Horton Plains

The three guides in this collection describe different ways of experiencing the Horton Plains area. The standard visitor trail and Great World's End are closely related, while Kirigalpoththa is a separate, more demanding undertaking that needs its own route decision.

This is a national-park environment rather than an unrestricted recreation area. Current park instructions, weather, visibility, trail conditions and permitted access take priority over any general plan published here.

Best Suited For

  • Cloud-forest landscapes
  • High-altitude walking
  • Geology and viewpoints
  • Experienced hikers

Before You Build an Itinerary

  • 1Confirm current opening, ticket and trail-access arrangements with the responsible authority.
  • 2Cold, wind, rain and strong sun can occur during the same highland outing; carry suitable layers and protection.
  • 3Do not approach escarpment edges for photographs, especially in cloud or strong wind.
  • 4Treat Kirigalpoththa as a dedicated hike, not an automatic extension to the regular park circuit.
