About this route

The Nonpareil Estate Road leads through the estate from the Nanperiyal side toward Baker's Bend. Sabaragamuwa Province Tourism describes Baker's Bend as a horseshoe-shaped bend in the upper estate, approximately 1,530 metres above sea level, reached by an approximately 12-kilometre estate road. The provincial destination page identifies Baker's Bend as the 23rd bend on the road toward the upper estate. This makes the bend a defined destination on an out-and-back estate journey, not evidence of a public sightseeing loop or an authorised continuation into the national park. Visitors must obtain permission from Nonpareil Estate before attempting to reach the viewpoint. Permission, permitted travel mode, opening conditions, and vehicle arrangements should be confirmed directly for the intended date rather than inferred from an older route description. The road is narrow and winding, and mist, rain, surface damage, estate operations, or maintenance can affect access. Nonpareil Estate Falls and other streams can be seen from parts of the wider route, but water level and safe viewing conditions vary. Estate permission to reach Baker's Bend does not authorize entry into Horton Plains National Park through an unofficial continuation. A national-park visit requires the current Department of Wildlife Conservation permit and an authorized entrance. Confirm the return journey, daylight, supplies, road condition, and suitable transport before entering the estate.

Route safety

Review these road, access, and weather notes before setting off

  • Road is narrow with sharp bends and steep drop-offs.
  • Surface can be slippery after rain - drive cautiously.
  • Do not assume that exposed bends or edges have protective barriers.
  • Postpone travel in heavy mist, unsafe weather, or insufficient daylight.
  • Estate access does not permit entry into protected national-park land.
  • Do not depend on continuous mobile coverage for navigation or emergencies.

Travel Tips

  • Obtain current permission from Nonpareil Estate before travelling to Baker's Bend.
  • Confirm whether walking or vehicle access is permitted and which vehicle type the estate recommends for the current road condition.
  • Allow the estate's operating needs, weather, mist, and daylight to determine whether the route is suitable that day.
  • Carry water and essential supplies, and verify current services before entering the estate road.
  • Arrange the return journey in advance and do not assume transport or mobile service will be available.
  • Use an authorized entrance and current DWC permit for any separate Horton Plains National Park visit.
