Overview
Mihintale is one of Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites, located approximately 11 km from Anuradhapura. It is traditionally regarded as the place where the introduction of Buddhism to the island began.
According to ancient chronicles, Arahat Mahinda - the son of Emperor Ashoka - met King Devanampiyatissa on this mountain during the Poson full moon day, introducing Buddhism to Sri Lanka. This event marked a turning point in the island's cultural and religious history.
The site consists of a complex of ancient monasteries, stupas, caves, and inscriptions dating back to the 3rd century BCE. Over time, Mihintale developed into a major monastic centre with numerous structures built for Buddhist monks.
The principal approach is associated with approximately 1,840 granite steps. The wider complex includes Ambasthala, Mahaseya, Kantaka Cetiya, monastic rock shelters, ponds and the remains of buildings used by the monastic community. Visitors do not need to treat every monument or elevated viewpoint as a single continuous climb; choose a route that suits the available time, heat and mobility.
From the top, panoramic views extend across the plains of Anuradhapura, making the climb both a spiritual and scenic experience. Today, Mihintale remains an active pilgrimage destination, especially during the Poson festival.
