Planning a Visit to Anuradhapura

Ceylon Folk currently connects two different experiences with the Anuradhapura travel area: the sacred hill complex of Mihintale and Wilpattu National Park. Mihintale is a cultural and pilgrimage visit involving exposed steps and sacred spaces, while Wilpattu requires separate wildlife, gate and safari planning.

This is not yet a complete guide to the ancient city or every monument in Anuradhapura. Use the destination cards below for the places we have researched, and allow additional planning time if the wider archaeological city is part of your trip.

Best Suited For

  • Buddhist heritage
  • Pilgrimage sites
  • Dry-zone wildlife
  • History-focused travel

Before You Build an Itinerary

  • 1Treat Mihintale and Wilpattu as separate outings rather than nearby stops on one short circuit.
  • 2Sacred sites require modest clothing and may involve removing footwear on hot surfaces.
  • 3Confirm national-park gate conditions, safari arrangements and current wildlife rules before departure.
  • 4Heat can materially change the difficulty of exposed archaeological and stair routes.
