The Pekoe Trail is a 300-kilometre long-distance walking trail divided into 22
stages across Sri Lanka's Central Highlands. It begins at the Ceylon Tea Museum
in Hanthana near Kandy and finishes in Nuwara Eliya.
The official route passes through tea country, mountain landscapes, forests,
towns, villages, and working estates. The stages travel through areas including
Deltota, Tawalantenna, Bogawantalawa, Haputale, Ella, Hali Ela, Etampitiya,
Pussellawa, and Kandapola before reaching Nuwara Eliya.
Each stage is a separate walk with its own distance, elevation, difficulty,
access conditions, and estimated duration. A visitor can complete an individual
stage or combine stages, but should plan each section from its current official
stage information rather than treating the full trail as one uniform route.
The Pekoe Trail Organisation describes the trail as a low-impact tourism project
that works with communities along the route. Hikers pass through lived-in areas
and working tea estates, so they should remain on the authorized trail, respect
local instructions, and avoid disturbing homes, workplaces, religious sites,
wildlife, and natural areas.
Trail conditions can change after heavy rain, landslides, estate activity, or
maintenance. Before every hike, check the official Pekoe Trail app, Trail Watch,
and official weather advisories for the selected stage.
