Overview

Kondagala Rock is a small but dramatic rocky summit located inside Loolcandura Estate near Deltota in the Kandy District. The summit rises approximately 150 metres and stretches about 200 metres in length.

Situated within Sri Lanka's first commercial tea estate, originally developed by Sir James Taylor, Kondagala offers wide panoramic views across surrounding mountains including Hanthana and the Gampola region.

The summit is a large flat rock plateau capable of holding many visitors at once. However, sections of the rock have very steep edges, and strong winds are common at the top. Caution is required near the drop-offs.

The hike from the estate road to the summit takes roughly 15 minutes via a short footpath that begins near the bungalow ruins inside the estate. The trail passes through tea plantations and light forest before reaching the rock.

Kondagala differs from the longer regional mountain routes: the walking section is short, but entry depends on an operating estate and the exposed rock still requires care. It works best as an extension after James Taylor's Seat and the estate's permitted heritage stops, subject to current access instructions.

The provincial tourism description treats the summit and tea-estate heritage as related but separate experiences. A clear day may reveal several highland ranges, while sudden mist can remove those reference points quickly. Return by the same confirmed estate path and do not use the broad rock surface as evidence that every edge or descent is safe.
