Plan Door to Door, Not Town to Town

For every travel day, identify the exact starting address, boarding point, service, transfer, arrival point, and final connection to the accommodation or attraction. A map estimate between two towns does not include station access, waiting, luggage, a missed transfer, or the final rural road. Confirm which parts can be reserved, which are paid on the day, and what alternative is available if a connection is full, delayed, cancelled, or finishes before the required stop.

Check Trains Through Sri Lanka Railways

Use the official Sri Lanka Railways timetable for the exact origin and destination stations, then check whether the intended train and class support advance seat reservation. A timetable entry and a reserved seat are different things, and a sold-out online allocation does not prove that another train or ticket type is available. Read the current reservation terms, enter passenger details accurately, retain the required ticket or e-ticket and identification, and confirm any connection separately. Recheck close to departure because operations and reservation conditions can change.

Use Bus Information at the Correct Level

The National Transport Commission publishes inter-provincial timetable, route, service-class, and fare information. A journey within one province or a rural feeder service may require information from the relevant provincial authority, bus station, operator, accommodation, or a knowledgeable local guide. Confirm the route number or destination board, boarding point, transfer location, final practical service, luggage arrangement, and where to get off. Fare revisions make old blog prices unreliable, so use the current official fare information where the route is covered.

Agree Three-Wheeler and Taxi Journeys Before Departure

For a three-wheeler, taxi, or app-arranged vehicle, confirm the exact destination and pickup point before starting. Use an operating meter when applicable or agree the complete fare, route, waiting time, parking, tolls, luggage, and return arrangement. A quoted price for a drop-off is not automatically a round trip or a vehicle kept for the day. Save the driver's contact details for a planned collection, but keep an alternative when mobile coverage or vehicle availability may be unreliable.

Match a Private Vehicle to the Whole Access Road

When hiring a private driver, give the complete route rather than only the nearest town. Confirm the vehicle, passenger and luggage capacity, road surface, gradient, width, estate or protected-area access, parking, turnaround point, driver accommodation if relevant, total price, inclusions, and overtime or waiting terms. A normal car, van, or three-wheeler may be unsuitable for a particular remote approach. Recheck after heavy rain, road work, or a responsible local warning.

Verify Self-Drive Permission and Vehicle Documents

Do not assume that a foreign driving licence or international driving permit by itself authorizes driving in Sri Lanka. Check the current Department of Motor Traffic procedure and obtain the temporary Sri Lankan licence or other official recognition required for your circumstances before taking control of a vehicle. Confirm that the permitted class covers the specific car or motorcycle, and inspect the rental agreement, registration, insurance, damage process, emergency contact, and restrictions on unpaved or estate roads. If any legal or insurance condition is unclear, do not drive until the issuing authority or provider resolves it.

Protect the Journey From Common Failure Points

Keep essential tickets, identification, accommodation details, and route information available offline, and allow time for queues and transfers. Confirm payment methods without assuming every driver, counter, or rural service accepts cards. Keep valuables and essential medication with you rather than in unattended luggage. Never use an active railway track, bridge, tunnel, or road carriageway as a walking shortcut or photography position, and follow transport staff, police, road signs, and barriers.

Make a Final Transport Check

Before an important journey, reconfirm the operating service, exact station or stop, departure time, reservation or ticket status, luggage, connection, final local transfer, payment, and arrival arrangement. For a remote destination, also confirm current road condition, suitable vehicle, return pickup, mobile coverage, and an alternative plan. Official transport information controls regulated details; station staff, accommodation, and knowledgeable local guides can help with current local connections but should not be used to override an authority instruction.
